Two simple rules for pulling the ‘IT’S SCIENCE!’ card:

keelanrosa:

  1. Know what you’re talking about. For example, don’t drop the ‘there’s only XX or XY chromosomes and XX=vagina=woman and XY=penis=man, it’s SCIENCE!’ line when actually XO and XXX and XXY and a whole host of other chromosomal sets and intersex conditions, including XX male and XY female, are equally scientific (albeit less common) - and that’s even sticking with biological essentialism and not getting into the many many many scientists who actually consider transgenderism to be a Real Thing instead of complete rubbish.
SCIENCE! is, astonishingly enough, a massive and complicated field of experience and evidence, not just a shiny word you can use to win any argument.
  2. If you do know what you’re talking about and still actually consider it worth picking a fight over, i expect you to apply this to all areas of life.
I wish you great success in your inevitable campaign to have peanuts renamed and removed from all mixed-‘nut’ snack foods because, as any scientist will tell you, peanuts are a legume and not a nut and the misleading politically correct anti-science actions to the contrary are a travesty.

Things I wish would happen to people that misuse the word rape

cchellez:

Let me start this off by saying that I would never wish for someone to be raped, no matter how angry it makes me to see people carelessly using that word.

I don’t understand where people feel the need to use rape as a barometer for how much they “love” someone. I put love in quotations because really if you need to use words like rape to prove to others that you like someone enough, it’s more like crazed infatuation or in most cases just plain ignorance and stupidity.

But to get to the point of this post, whenever I see people tossing rape around I really wish these things would automatically happen to the person using it:

  • A sit down with convicted rapists - Supervised of course, but I really want them to sit in a room with a convicted rapist while they take the time to detail the thought process and the experience of raping someone to them. I can’t imagine that sitting in a chair across from someone willing to perform such a hideous act, much less talk about it would be something easily forgotten. It makes my skin crawl just thinking about it.
  • An interview with rape victims - If hearing one side of the twisted story wasn’t enough to make them understand, surely sitting in a room full of rape victims as they tell their stories should do it. Hearing it first hand from people that have lived through one of the most horrible acts of crime is eye opening, and careless people need that experience.

I’m sure there are other methods much less civilized that others can think of to help people understand that rape is not just a word and it’s certainly not a joke. It’s not funny or cute and it most definitely isn’t related to any form of love…at all.

So please, for the sake of everyone’s sanity, just stop. Find other words to express your love and admiration for someone. Because unless you’re looking to force yourself on someone and scar them in more ways than one, rape is not the word you are looking for.
